Samurai Shodown is set in feudal Japan, where a figure named Shiro Tokisada Amakusa spreads a heretical faith. This character is actually a vessel for the malevolent entity Ambrosia, whose goal is to plunge the world into permanent darkness.
Players choose from a roster of twelve primary warriors, with three additional bonus characters available. Each combatant has a distinct personal mission to accomplish while pursuing the overarching objective of confronting Amakusa.
A technical limitation of the 16-bit Sega Genesis hardware resulted in the omission of one fighter, Earthquake, from this version of the game.
