Ranger X Overview
Ranger X is a side scrolling shooter for the SEGA MegaDrive, a title that arrived late in the console's lifecycle. Its gameplay centers on controlling a large mech that can be accompanied by a smaller vehicle like sidekick. These two units can combine to unlock an alternate firing mode.
Graphically, the game was innovative within the hardware constraints, employing techniques to suggest three dimensional spaces. This includes a 3D style introduction for many levels and backgrounds that use line based scrolling effects to create a sense of depth.
Mechanically, the player's mech can fire in both forward and backward directions using separate inputs. Movement is augmented by a rocket pack that allows for short hovering and boosted jumps from the ground. The level design blends platforming and shooting elements, with progression not strictly bound to a left to right path.
Despite its origins with an unknown developer and minimal promotional support at release, Ranger X is often noted for its technical demonstration of the Genesis/MegaDrive's capabilities.
