Samurai Shodown is set in early feudal Japan, where a conflict arises from the corrupted preacher Shiro Tokisada Amakusa. This figure has been possessed by the entity Ambrosia, whose goal is to cover the world in darkness.
Players engage with this threat by choosing a warrior from a roster of twelve primary combatants, with three additional bonus characters also available. Each character pursues a unique personal mission while aiming to defeat Amakusa. A technical note is that the roster for the Genesis console release is slightly reduced, omitting the character Earthquake due to hardware constraints.
