Golden Axe II returns players to a medieval fantasy setting where the land faces a new threat. The antagonist Dark Guld has escaped imprisonment and seized the Golden Axe, using its power to spread chaos with his followers.
Three returning heroes, the barbarian Ax-Battler, the Amazon Tyris-Flare, and the dwarf Gilius Thunderhead, set out to confront this oppression and reclaim the weapon. Their methods include direct melee combat and the collection of magical scrolls to cast spells. Additionally, players can mount creatures like dragons to utilize their attacks during the journey.
The core hack and slash gameplay remains consistent with the first title, focusing on defeating waves of opponents through physical and magical means.
