Golden Axe Overview
Golden Axe is a side scrolling beat 'em up set in the medieval realm of Yuria. The land is controlled by the warlord Death Adder, who has taken the king and princess hostage and possesses the legendary Golden Axe. Three warriors, each with a personal motive for revenge, undertake a journey through various environments to confront him: the barbarian Ax Battler, the amazon Tyris Flare, and the dwarf Gilius Thunderhead.
Combat involves moving horizontally through stages and engaging groups of enemies with melee attacks. Each character has a distinct weapon and fighting style, from balanced swordplay to fast slashes and wide axe swings. Players can perform basic attacks, jumps, and a running charge, with enemy encounters requiring careful positioning. The game can be played solo or cooperatively by two players, where friendly fire makes coordination and timing important.
Strategic depth comes from magical attacks and mounted combat. Magic spells, unique to each hero, are powered by potions collected from blue thieves. These spells grow in strength with more potions, ranging from earth and lightning to the particularly powerful fire magic of Tyris Flare. Players can also temporarily command enemy creatures, like fire breathing dragons, after defeating their riders, gaining advantages in power and reach. Health is managed by collecting food from green thieves, with a limited number of lives making the overall experience challenging.
Level progression is linear, punctuated by campfire scenes that allow for resource gathering. Various releases of the game introduced changes; the Sega Genesis version added an exclusive stage and a duel mode, while other home console ports adapted or omitted features due to hardware. Later digital re releases maintained the core arcade gameplay while incorporating modern features like save states.
