Tales of the Unknown: Volume I - The Bard's Tale is a fantasy role-playing game where players form a party of six adventurers to save the town of Skara Brae. This settlement has been besieged by monsters and cut off by an eternal winter, a spell cast by the evil wizard Mangar the Dark.
Gameplay involves first-person navigation of maze-like dungeons and parts of the town and overworld, with turn-based combat initiated randomly. The adventure is structured around exploring several dungeons before a final confrontation, making progression challenging.
Character creation offers a selection of classes including Warrior, Rogue, Hunter, Monk, Paladin, Bard, Magician, and Conjurer. The Bard holds particular importance, as their magical songs enhance the party in battle and are necessary to overcome certain obstacles. Magicians and Conjurers have the potential for advancement if specific in-game conditions are fulfilled.
