Blackthorne is a side-view platform action game where the player controls Kyle Blackthorne. He returns to his home planet of Tuul after two decades to confront Sarlac, who seized power using the Darkstone after Kyle's father sent him away.
Gameplay involves navigating maze-like environments, solving puzzles, and exploring. Combat is handled primarily with a shotgun, which can be upgraded, and various bombs that affect enemies and the environment. Progression requires finding keys to access new areas within the non-scrolling stages.
