Wings of Fury Overview
Wings of Fury is an action-focused title set in the Pacific theater of World War II, casting the player as a pilot of an F6F Hellcat. The core objective involves attacking Japanese island installations, with different targets requiring specific ordnance; concrete bunkers are vulnerable only to rockets, while other structures can be destroyed with bombs. Following aerial bombardments, strafing ground troops with machine guns becomes a subsequent task.
Operations commence from an aircraft carrier, which serves as a central hub for resupplying fuel and munitions and for repairing aircraft damage. This vessel must also be defended from hostile attacks. Additional mission requirements include engaging enemy fighter aircraft in dogfights and using torpedoes to sink battleships.
A separate Game Boy Color adaptation introduces several modifications. The violence is toned down, replacing strafing runs on soldiers with attacks on vehicles like jeeps and trucks. This version omits certain elements, such as enemy torpedo planes and a first-person view window, but adds new aerial maneuvers and a post-mission report on ammunition efficiency, where using less than the allocated supply grants bonus points.
The structure of the campaign also differs between releases. The original game organizes 21 missions across seven ranks, typically with three missions each. The portable version reduces this to 15 total missions, with most ranks containing only two, altering the progression's pace and length.
