The Ancient Art of War Overview
The Ancient Art of War is a real-time strategy title set in a pre-gunpowder era. Its core warfare mechanics revolve around three primary combat units: fast barbarians, slow knights, and ranged archers. A fourth unit, the spy, functions as a non-combatant under specific campaign conditions.
Players engage with the game through two distinct interfaces. A top-down tactical map allows for the coordination, positioning, and reinforcement of armies across varied terrain, with real-time commands for attack or defense. The pace of time here can be adjusted to aid planning. When forces clash, the view shifts to a combat screen where squads of up to fourteen soldiers engage based on their formation and the player's immediate commands.
Scenarios offer configurable settings for geography, victory conditions, visibility, and difficulty. The challenging aspect of the game is personified through eight distinct opponents, including historical figures like Alexander the Great and Sun Tzu, as well as fictional commanders, each employing unique strategies.
Beyond the predefined content, the game includes a construction set. This editor enables the creation of custom campaigns, allowing players to design stories, rules, maps, and modify default troop formations.
