Manhunter 2: San Francisco is a point and click adventure game that continues the story directly from its predecessor. The player character, having stolen a ship, crash lands in San Francisco while pursuing a serial killer named Phil.
The gameplay involves investigating locations from a first person perspective to gather clues. A key tool is the MAD tracking device, used to follow suspects identified by the ruling alien Orbs. The player must deduce these suspects' names through collected evidence. This core investigative loop is punctuated by mandatory arcade sequences, though a new difficulty setting has been added.
Set in a dystopian version of the Bay Area, the game depicts familiar landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz under alien control. The player operates undercover, posing as a local Manhunter to work for the Orbs while secretly aiding the human resistance and tracking Phil's murders.
