Superhero League of Hoboken Overview
Superhero League of Hoboken presents a post-apocalyptic setting where much of the Northeastern United States is flooded and overrun by mutants, with civilization reduced to isolated city-states. The player leads a team of superheroes, beginning with characters like Crimson Tape, whose power involves creating organizational charts, and others with similarly unconventional abilities such as inducing high cholesterol or seeing inside sealed containers.
Progression is mission-based, with objectives delivered by a central computer. Advancing the league's standing involves exploring a top-down overworld where random enemy encounters trigger turn-based, first-person combat. Characters possess stats like brawn and brains, can be equipped with various items, and utilize their unique powers in battles alongside standard attacks. A party can include up to nine members, who gain experience from combat victories and from fully mapping areas, leading to level increases.
The adventure game components require traveling to specific locations, interacting through a verb-based interface with a first-person perspective, and solving puzzles often reliant on inventory items. Shops within these areas provide weapons and equipment. Certain terrain obstacles or subway access points require finding key items to bypass. The game's tone is consistently humorous, with descriptive text appearing even during combat sequences. A CD release added voice acting to the experience.
The overarching narrative goal involves completing assignments to eventually confront a primary antagonist, Dr. Entropy, who opposes efforts to rebuild society. As the league's prestige grows, additional superheroes with exotic powers join the roster, aiding in the overall campaign.
