Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow is a side scrolling platform game featuring Disney's Donald Duck as a detective. His investigation centers on the disappearance of a long lost Idol, leading him through environments populated by voodoo themed adversaries.
Gameplay involves a dual character system. The default form, Maui Mallard, employs a bug gun that fires various insect based projectiles. These can be combined for increased offensive effect. By collecting Yin Yang coins, the player can temporarily transform into Ninja Maui. This alternate persona uses a bo staff for combat and possesses enhanced mobility, including the ability to climb between walls and swing from specific points.
Managing the transformation is a key mechanic, as the Ninja form is sustained by a finite supply of Yin Yang coins. The adventure is considered challenging, requiring strategic use of both characters' abilities to progress. A separate Game Boy version exists with altered level design and fewer hidden elements.
