Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow is a side scrolling platform game featuring Disney's Donald Duck as a detective. His investigation into a missing idol leads him through environments populated by voodoo themed adversaries.
Gameplay involves managing two distinct forms with separate abilities. The standard Maui Mallard employs a bug gun, using various insect based ammunition that can be combined for stronger attacks. A transformation into Ninja Maui is enabled by collecting Yin Yang coins, which also act as a fuel for this state.
As Ninja Maui, the character wields a bo staff for combat and gains enhanced mobility. This includes using the staff to climb between walls and to swing from specific environmental points, allowing access to new areas.
