Dragon Spirit Overview
Dragon Spirit is a vertical shoot-em-up where the player controls a dragon across nine scrolling stages. The core action involves destroying airborne and terrestrial enemies using two distinct fire attacks: one projects forward, while the other targets the ground directly ahead.
The narrative framework involves a heroic transformation to rescue a kidnapped royal figure. In the primary arcade storyline, the warrior Amul becomes a blue dragon to save Princess Alicia from the monster Zawell.
Progression is aided by collecting power-ups, which provide advantages such as additional dragon heads, increased health, and enhanced shot speed. These upgrades are valuable for confronting the boss enemy that concludes each stage, making the journey challenging if they are lost prematurely.
The NES release introduces significant alterations, framing itself as a sequel titled "A New Legend." It features a new plot where the children of King Amul and Queen Alicia are central, with Prince Lace embarking on a rescue mission after his sister Iris is captured by a different antagonist, Galda. This version also includes a unique introductory stage; success leads to a standard "Blue Dragon" mode, while failure triggers an easy "Gold Dragon" mode with reduced stages, more hit points, and a distinct conclusion.
Variations exist between different home console ports. Notably, the TurboGrafx-16 version replaces the seventh and eighth stages, which are underwater and dark-themed in other releases, with stages set inside a castle.
