Defender of the Crown is a strategy game set in a medieval England destabilized by the king's death and the theft of his crown. Players assume control of one of four Saxon knights, beginning with minimal forces and a single castle.
Victory requires expanding a military presence to overcome rival Norman lords, and occasionally competing Saxon factions, for territorial control. Beyond direct conquest, the gameplay incorporates specific events such as jousting tournaments, which offer rewards like prestige or land, and castle raids that can yield resources or political marriage alliances.
