Centurion: Defender of Rome Overview
Centurion: Defender of Rome is a turn-based strategy game set in 275 BC where the player, beginning as a legionnaire, aims to control all provinces of the known world. The player starts with Rome and a single legion, expanding through military force or diplomatic persuasion.
Provincial management involves setting tax rates and placating the populace by funding public games. These games, such as chariot races or gladiatorial combats, transition into direct-control action sequences. Military expansion requires raising and reinforcing legions, which vary in strength and depend on local manpower for their effectiveness.
When a legion enters an unconquered province, negotiation with the local ruler is possible, though conflict is more common. Land battles shift to an isometric tactical view where the player issues orders to units within a command radius until one army is destroyed or flees. Naval warfare is also present, where purchasing warships leads to a flagship duel mini-game, though the broader fleet strength determines the final outcome.
