Loom Overview
Loom is an adventure game where players guide Bobbin Threadbare, a young outcast from the Guild of Weavers. This guild, exiled by others for its reality-altering craft, is transformed into swans, leaving Bobbin to seek answers and his lost community.
Gameplay revolves around a unique spell system called drafts, which are sequences of four notes played on a distaff. These drafts, learned through exploration, manipulate objects directly instead of using an inventory. Puzzles are solved by applying or reversing these musical patterns, with effects ranging from simple actions to complex transformations like turning straw into gold.
Progression involves accessing higher notes on the distaff to learn more powerful drafts. The interface adapts to three difficulty levels, making the game fair to challenging by gradually removing visual aids for the musical sequences.
Later releases offered enhanced 256-color graphics and audio. The CD DOS version added full voice acting but cut some scenes, while the FM Towns version kept those scenes and graphical improvements but lacked voice work.
