X-COM: UFO Defense Overview
X-COM: UFO Defense is a strategy game set in a near-future 1998 where escalating alien encounters lead world governments to form a covert paramilitary organization. The player commands this organization, managing its global operations, technological development, and financial survival.
Strategic oversight occurs on a globe view where UFO activity is monitored. From here, aircraft are dispatched to intercept alien craft or deploy soldiers for ground assaults. Financial management is continuous, covering salaries for personnel, construction, aircraft maintenance, and supplies. Funding comes from member nations, but this support can be withdrawn if performance in a region is lacking, potentially leading to nations allying with the alien threat.
Ground combat shifts to an isometric, turn-based tactical mode. Each soldier has a pool of Time Units expended for every action, from movement to firing weapons. Missions typically require eliminating all alien forces, though capturing live specimens can accelerate research. Success yields alien artifacts for study.
Research and development is a core pillar, as recovered alien technology is essential for creating effective weapons and equipment. The player must balance this urgent research with the logistical and economic constraints of running a global defense initiative, making the overall campaign challenging.
