Arctic Baron is a strategic game set in a frozen world where the sun has vanished. The player takes on the role of a train captain whose mission is to investigate the powerful Viking Union, which controls the railways and may be responsible for the environmental catastrophe.
Gameplay involves managing a train, ensuring it has sufficient fuel, and engaging in trade at various towns. Each settlement has a specialized economic function and can provide clues to advance the story. Commodities for trade include slaves, who are treated as a resource alongside other goods.
Encounters with rival trains lead to combat, a core system where performance can be improved through purchased upgrades. Success depends on balancing resource management, trade, and combat to ultimately challenge the dominant Union, making the overall experience challenging.
