Wing Commander: Privateer Overview
Wing Commander: Privateer is a space simulation that blends trading with combat, offering a free-form experience within the established Wing Commander setting. The player operates as a privateer on the fringes of Human space, a region bustling with industrial activity and diverse factions including military forces, pirates, merchants, and fanatical Retros.
Gameplay revolves around acquiring credits to upgrade one's ship and capabilities. Initial missions, accepted from various sources that range from simple mission computers to specialized fixers, provide a primary income. These tasks can involve combat, delivery, or bounty hunting. Players can also engage in commodity trading using their ship's cargo hold to supplement their earnings.
Progression is tied to this economic loop. Starting with a basic scout ship, a player can eventually purchase one of three specialized vessels: the cargo-focused Galaxy, the defensively oriented Orion, or the combat-centric Centurion. Funds are also used to buy optional equipment like weapons, shields, armor, and engines. While a central narrative exists, the structure allows players to pursue it at their own pace or engage in activities outside of it, continuing play even after the main story concludes.
The setting introduces an additional layer of mystery, as a conflict in the region disturbs an ancient and powerful threat. This backdrop of constant activity, from lawful shipping to illicit operations, creates the environment where a privateer carves out a living.
