Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi Overview
Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi continues its series' focus on cinematic narrative, using animated sequences to advance its plot between combat missions. The story begins with the player character being held responsible for the destruction of their carrier, the Tiger's Claw, leading to a demotion and exile to a remote posting. A decade later, an opportunity for redemption arises when the player defends the Confederation flagship Concordia, reunites with former comrades, and seeks to clear their name while confronting the Kilrathi threat.
The core space combat simulation retains the fundamental mechanics of the first game but introduces significant new tactical elements. While a single fighter class, the Rapier, returns in an improved form, the fleets for both factions are otherwise composed of entirely new spacecraft. The addition of phase shielding for capital ships creates a challenging new objective, as these vessels can only be harmed by specialized torpedoes. This necessitates the use of heavy fighters or bombers, which are vulnerable during the lengthy shield analysis and torpedo lock-on procedure. These bombers are equipped with defensive gun turrets for protection, and pilots have access to chaff pods to decoy incoming missiles, adding layers to both offensive and defensive strategy.
