Merlin Challenge is a simulation of Royal Navy helicopter operations. The player controls a Merlin helicopter, with the primary objective being to land on the stern of a frigate.
The experience is presented through a 3D visual interface that offers multiple camera perspectives, accompanied by digitized audio. The simulation begins with the aircraft positioned near the ship. Upon completing a landing, the player receives a detailed performance analysis and score.
Three selectable difficulty settings adjust the experience, making the flight model more realistic and introducing environmental factors like wind. This progression makes the core task increasingly challenging.
