Advanced Destroyer Simulator Overview
Advanced Destroyer Simulator is a World War 2 naval simulation where the player commands a single British O-class destroyer, the H.M.S. Onslaught. The game presents its action through real-time filled 3D graphics, a technical feature it pioneered for the genre. Missions are organized into three distinct geographical scenarios, each containing several time-critical assignments.
Operational duties range from escorting convoys and hunting submarines to engaging in direct ship-to-ship combat and running blockades. Enemy forces include surface vessels like freighters, torpedo boats, and cruisers, as well as Stuka dive bombers from coastal bases and submarines that must surface to be engaged. The destroyer is equipped with cannon turrets, torpedo tubes, and sonar for detecting submerged targets.
Gameplay involves manual, first-person navigation of the ship using a map, with combat focusing on close-quarters exchanges of torpedoes and cannon fire. Missions lack an overarching campaign, but each scenario includes an open-ended mode for free exploration and engagement. Managing the vessel's condition is part of the challenge, as missions may require docking at friendly ports for repairs and resupply.
