Tales of Phantasia is a Japanese-style role-playing game where the player primarily directs a village youth named Cless. His ordinary life is shattered when he returns from a hunting trip to find his home destroyed and his family killed, a tragedy linked to a pendant he received.
The narrative follows Cless as he leaves to seek out his uncle, a journey that expands into a larger quest. Combat occurs on dedicated side-scrolling screens and is action-oriented, with the player controlling one character directly while artificial intelligence manages other party members.
During these real-time battles, the game can be paused to issue commands for magic or item use, or to adjust the tactical behavior of allies.
