Al Unser Jr.'s Road to the Top is a racing game structured around a primary career progression. The central mode involves competing in a series of four distinct racing events, each utilizing a different type of vehicle. Players begin with go-karts before advancing to snowmobiles, IROC cars, and finally Indy cars.
Success across all events, which contain three courses each, leads to a final championship race against Al Unser Jr. himself.
