Batman Returns Overview
Batman Returns on the SNES adapts the film's conflict with the Penguin and Catwoman into a side scrolling action game. The primary mode is a beat 'em up where Batman fights through members of the Red Triangle Circus Gang, who appear as various types of armed and unarmed clowns.
Gameplay alternates between two distinct styles of side scrolling stages. One allows free movement to employ punches, kicks, and combos against enemies, while the other restricts movement to a single plane, emphasizing projectile combat. In both types, Batman can utilize gadgets like the Batarang for ranged attacks and a grappling hook for navigation.
Levels conclude with boss encounters against characters such as Catwoman and the Penguin. A single stage shifts perspective to a behind the car view for a Batmobile sequence, where players must avoid and shoot clown ridden vehicles before facing another boss. Scenes from the movie are used to advance the narrative between these action segments.
