Al Unser Jr. Turbo Racing Overview
Al Unser Jr. Turbo Racing is a Formula 1 racing title for the NES, despite being named for an IndyCar driver. The primary mode is a championship season spanning sixteen events. Each race allows for unlimited practice, a single qualifying lap to determine grid position, and the main event.
Success in races influences a car setup system, where earned points can be used to improve the vehicle before the next competition. The gameplay leans toward an action style rather than a simulation. While manual gear shifting is featured, pit stops for damage freeze time for all drivers, and a limited turbo boost is available. Players can either create their own team or race as Al Unser Jr., a role which provides access to the best car from the start.
Outside of the championship, a time trial option exists where computer opponents can be toggled on or off. The overall objective is to secure the championship title through consistent race performance.
