Pac-Attack Overview
Pac-Attack is a block-dropping puzzle game for the Sega Genesis, adapted from the Japanese arcade title Cosmo Gang the Puzzle. Its core mechanics involve placing falling pieces that consist of ghosts and blocks, followed by a Pac-Man piece every third drop. The player's goal is to strategically position these elements so that Pac-Man can consume ghosts to clear space, preventing the stack from reaching the top of the play area.
Pac-Man's movement is automated, moving left or right at random after placement until he encounters an obstacle, which causes him to change direction. A special fairy can be summoned by filling a meter, which clears several lines of ghosts but leaves any blocks above them to fall. The game includes a standard challenging versus mode where clearing ghosts sends additional ghosts to an opponent's screen.
Beyond the main puzzle mode, a dedicated Puzzle mode offers 100 levels with a specific objective: clear all ghosts using a limited number of Pac-Man pieces, often fewer than four. This mode uniquely allows direct control over Pac-Man's direction. Notably, later handheld releases omitted the two-player versus mode.
