Mamono Hunter Yōko: Dai 7 no Keishō adapts the story of its anime source, Devil Hunter Yohko. The protagonist, Yōko Mano, is a high school student who discovers her destiny as the latest in a long family line of demon fighters. Her role is to prevent these forces from crossing into the human world through dimensional portals and performing a destructive ritual.
Gameplay involves navigating side-scrolling stages with platforming challenges, similar to the Valis series. Yōko's primary weapon is a sword for close combat, but her defensive tool can also be deployed offensively. By holding the attack button, she generates a shield that blocks certain enemy strikes; this shield can then be thrown as a projectile.
The adventure moves through a series of themed environments, including aquatic areas, caverns, and icy regions. The central conflict involves demons attempting to eliminate Yōko before she can fully assume her inherited duty as the 108th Devil Hunter, tasked with protecting Earth.
