Deadly Moves is a fighting game where players assume the role of Joe, a young American fighter on a global journey to prove his skill. His quest involves seeking out various martial arts teachers and facing other combatants, with the narrative framing his progression as increasingly challenging.
The combat system operates as a standard 2D fighter, incorporating punches, kicks, and jumps. A notable mechanical distinction is the ability for characters to move vertically during bouts, introducing a spatial layer beyond purely lateral movement.
In single-player mode, the experience is focused exclusively on Joe's storyline. The two-player versus mode offers greater flexibility, allowing selection from a roster of seven fighters and a choice of arena.
