Mega Man 6 begins with a global event, the First Annual Robot Design Contest, which attracts numerous international entrants. The competition's sponsor, a figure known as Mr. X, abruptly seizes eight of the contest's powerful Robot Masters for his own ambitions of world domination.
When Mega Man challenges him, Mr. X reveals a startling truth: he had been manipulating the series' recurring antagonist, Dr. Wily, as a mere instrument. This revelation propels Mega Man into a new conflict, where he must systematically overcome the eight appropriated Robot Masters before confronting Mr. X directly to end his threat.
