Ghostbusters Overview
Ghostbusters for the NES adapts the premise of the film, casting the player as the manager of the paranormal elimination service. The core objective is to manage a rising citywide spectral threat level, referred to as PK energy, by capturing ghosts before it reaches a critical point.
Gameplay involves strategic navigation and direct action. From a headquarters screen, the player monitors a map for disturbances and plans a driving route. Controlling a purchased vehicle, the player can intercept roaming spirits while navigating city streets to reach specific haunted locations.
Upon arrival, the perspective shifts to a side view for ghost capture. The player positions two characters who deploy proton beams and a trap. The key action is maneuvering the ghost over the trap to secure it, with a successful capture providing funds for vehicle upgrades. Failure results in the ghost escaping after sliming a character.
The game's pacing is challenging, as the PK level constantly increases, requiring consistent success to keep it controlled. The final challenge is triggered at the Temple of Zuul, where a confrontation with the entity Gozer awaits if the player has maintained manageable energy levels.
