Simon the Sorcerer Overview
Simon the Sorcerer is a point and click adventure where the protagonist, a modern English boy named Simon, is transported to a fantasy realm. This occurs after he carelessly discards a magical book found by his dog, an act which opens a portal.
Gameplay involves exploring a large, interconnected world of many screens, with a primary focus on puzzle solving through item collection and character dialogue. The interface prominently displays a set of verbs for interactions, and interactive elements are indicated by the mouse cursor. While puzzles typically have a single solution, players can pursue multiple objectives simultaneously, and the game prevents permanent failure or dead ends, making its pacing fair.
Simon's overarching goal is to rescue the wizard Calypso from his evil counterpart, Sordid, a quest he undertakes after initially escaping capture. The tone is humorous, with extensive, non essential conversation trees and frequent parodies of fantasy tropes. The design includes features like an instant travel map for discovered locations and occasional fourth wall breaking, where Simon addresses the player directly.
