Dig Dug Overview
Dig Dug is an action game where players navigate underground tunnels to eliminate monsters. The player character can dig through dirt in real time, creating pathways while being pursued by two enemy types. Pookas are red and goggled, while Fygars are green dragons capable of breathing fire horizontally along tunnels.
Defeating these enemies involves using an air pump to inflate them until they burst. This process can be interrupted, allowing partially inflated monsters to recover and resume their attack. Another tactic is to collapse large rocks by digging underneath them, which crushes any enemies below and also opens new tunnels. The game becomes more challenging as enemy speed increases in later stages.
Points are awarded for various actions, including bursting monsters and dropping rocks. Bonus opportunities exist, such as collecting vegetables that appear after certain conditions are met, with their value rising in later rounds. Additional points are granted for consecutive eliminations of ghost-form enemies or for crushing multiple foes with a single rock. A stage concludes once all monsters are defeated.
The game supports single-player or alternating two-player modes. Various home console and computer ports differed from the arcade original, with changes to graphics, sound, maze layouts, and enemy behavior. Contemporary digital re-releases typically emulate the arcade version while incorporating modern features like display options and online leaderboards.
