Donkey Kong Overview
Donkey Kong presents a series of industrial environments where the player controls Mario. The objective is to reach Pauline, who is held by the ape, within a time limit across four distinct stages. These settings include a construction site, a stage with elevators, a cement factory, and a final area with structural rivets.
Gameplay involves navigating platforms while avoiding hazards like rolling barrels and animated fire. A temporary power-up, a hammer, allows Mario to destroy these obstacles. Collecting items Pauline has left behind, such as her purse or umbrella, awards extra points.
The 1981 arcade release established key characters for Nintendo and incorporated a simple narrative through brief cutscenes. Completing the final stage by removing all rivets causes Donkey Kong to fall and ends the level cycle, which then repeats at a challenging increased difficulty. Many early home system versions did not include all four of the original stages.
