Tecmo Bowl Overview
Tecmo Bowl is an American football video game based on the 1988 NFL season, featuring real player names but not official team branding. Its primary modes include a single player tournament and two player competitive matches.
The on field action uses a top down, horizontally scrolling view. Teams are limited to nine players each, allowing for larger and more detailed character sprites. The presentation includes brief animated sequences after scores and during halftime.
Offensive play selection is restricted to four options, typically a mix of running and passing plays. After the snap, control shifts from the quarterback to either the ball carrier or a targeted receiver. Defensive strategy revolves around predicting the offensive play call before taking control of a single defender. A basic power meter governs all kicking actions.
While the game lacks statistical tracking or a traditional season mode, tournament progress can be saved and resumed using a password system.
