Rygar is a side-scrolling action game where the player advances through stages filled with hostile creatures. The hero, who has returned from the grave to confront the demon Ligar, uses a primary weapon called the Diskarmor, which resembles a shield on a chain.
Throughout the levels, various collectible powers provide effects such as increased weapon strength, temporary invisibility, or additional points. The player can also utilize other weapons, including projectiles that fire in four directions.
The setting involves a journey across vast lands to reach the lair of Ligar, an evil being whose minions attempt to stop the warrior. The objective is to restore peace to the land of Argool by defeating this threat.
