Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain Overview
Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain is a historical air combat simulation set during the 1940 conflict. It allows players to experience the campaign from both the British Royal Air Force and German Luftwaffe perspectives.
Available aircraft differ between sides, with the RAF offering the Spitfire and Hurricane fighters. The Luftwaffe provides a broader selection, including the Bf 109 fighter, the Bf 110, the Ju 87 Stuka, and several bomber models. Missions reflect historical roles, with British pilots typically defending against attacks and German pilots conducting bombing runs or providing escort.
Beyond individual missions, a strategic Campaign Mode lets players attempt to alter the historical outcome. This involves managing aircraft groups on a map and flying assigned missions, where results influence the broader campaign. Victory conditions are asymmetrical: the British aim to survive or destroy enough enemy planes, while the Germans seek to eliminate RAF fighters in the air or on the ground.
The simulation includes training for each aircraft and features control over multiple crew positions like gunners and bombardiers in larger planes. Additional tools are a mission builder for creating custom scenarios and a film playback function for reviewing flights.
