Sid Meier’s Colonization Overview
Sid Meier's Colonization is a strategy game set in the Americas from the 16th to 18th centuries. The player acts as a Viceroy tasked with establishing and managing colonies for a European monarch, facing challenges from rival powers and indigenous populations.
Gameplay involves exploring an unknown continent to found settlements. Colonists within these settlements perform jobs like gathering raw materials or manufacturing trade goods such as rum and coats. Specialists exist who are more efficient at specific tasks. The hammers produced represent construction speed for new buildings, which serve various functions from production to defense.
Economic activity centers on cargo, which can be sold in Europe for funds, traded with native villages or other colonies, or used domestically. Money is used to purchase ships, artillery, or to recruit new colonists. Exploration also reveals points of interest and native villages, which can provide benefits like maps or training, but also carry risks like hostile encounters or valuable treasure with a royal tax.
Defense requires creating military units from colonists by equipping them with muskets or horses. These units gain experience through combat. Artillery is effective in settlements but not in the field. The relationship with the ruling monarch deteriorates over time as taxes increase, incentivizing the production of Liberty Bells to foster rebel sentiment.
The endgame involves declaring independence, which triggers a challenging military confrontation against the king's expeditionary force. Victory in this revolutionary war constitutes winning the game.
