Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty Overview
Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty is set on the desert world Arrakis, the sole source of the vital substance known as Spice. The economic competition between three Great Houses, invited by the Emperor to increase production, escalates into open warfare. While the setting draws from Frank Herbert's universe, the game's narrative is largely independent of the books and films.
It is recognized for establishing core conventions of the modern real-time strategy genre. The player commands one of the three Houses through a series of battles, with early objectives focused on accumulating a set amount of credits and later missions requiring the total elimination of rival forces. Progression is challenging, as new technologies and unit types become available over the course of the campaign.
Gameplay revolves entirely around harvesting Spice, which is converted into credits at refineries to fund construction and unit production. The environment presents a constant hazard: sandworms, which are nearly invincible, inhabit the sandy spice fields and will consume any unit venturing there. Structures must be built on rocky terrain, creating a strategic consideration for base layout.
Each House gains access to a unique special unit and a powerful palace ability. After completing a mission, the player selects the next engagement from a map, a choice that influences the upcoming terrain but not the overall story arc.
