Prophecy of the Shadow is a fantasy role-playing game from SSI, developed after the company's period of AD&D titles. The player controls a single character through a 2D interface built on a custom engine. This quest unfolds in a land where magic is fading and outlawed, with Mage Hunters pursuing those who practice it. The hero begins under suspicion, falsely accused of murdering their master with a poisoned dirk. Spells are not innate; they must be discovered in magical tomes and require a specific catalyst item to be equipped for use.
Gameplay integrates exploration and real-time combat within the same environments, requiring the player to issue commands while enemies are active. Character capability is governed by three primary attributes: strength, magic, and agility, the last affecting the chance to evade attacks. The story is presented through a combination of still images, text, and brief animations featuring digitized actors placed over 3D backgrounds.
