Quest for Glory I: So You Want To Be A Hero is a graphical and interface remake of an earlier title. The visual presentation was upgraded to 256-color VGA, with all locations and character portraits receiving new artwork.
Interaction with the game world and its characters was streamlined through an icon-based interface, a system common in other contemporary adventure games. This extends to dialogue, where players select from menus rather than typing text commands, and some conversational content was subtly altered or expanded.
Combat employs a distinct visual style, using clay models and stop-motion animation for enemies viewed from a more distant, over-the-shoulder perspective. During these encounters, attack, parry, and dodge commands are represented as icons on a shield-shaped display, and a separate menu for spellcasting remains accessible. An option to flee battle is also provided.
