Lode Runner: The Legend Returns is a platform game that revives its predecessor's concept with enhanced presentation and expanded features. The player must evade capture by adversaries known as Mad Monks, who are depicted wearing red togas.
To navigate the environment and manage threats, the player has access to an arsenal of tools. These include explosives of varying sizes, a device for drilling through stone, and assorted traps. The use of certain items, like large bombs, can permanently alter the level layout.
The game offers both single-player and two-player modes. Additional components include a level editor for custom content, as well as music and sound effects to accompany the action.
