Rex Ronan: Experimental Surgeon is a 2D platform shooter set within a human body. The protagonist, a microsurgeon, is miniaturized to treat a tobacco salesman suffering from smoking related illnesses. The core gameplay involves navigating internal organs like the lungs and heart to remove harmful substances.
Hostile nanobots, deployed by a tobacco company to sabotage the operation, present a challenging threat during these sequences. The action is periodically interrupted by first person segments where the player pilots a vessel through bodily passageways, avoiding projectiles. Additionally, mines that test the player's knowledge of health facts are scattered throughout the environments.
The narrative framework presents an ironic situation where the surgeon must combat the very products his patient sold.
