Pro Sport Hockey presents a top down perspective of the ice rink, with the view shifting vertically to follow the player in possession of the puck. The title features a full roster of 24 NHL teams and 288 NHLPA players across its different platform releases.
Game modes differ between the NES and SNES versions. On the NES, players can engage in exhibition matches, a training mode for both offensive and defensive practice, and a super cup tournament using a round robin format. The SNES iteration offers a practice mode that can be used for exhibition play or shootout competitions, alongside a season mode. Team rankings from this season mode determine which clubs qualify for the super cup competition in this version.
