Pro Sport Hockey presents a top down perspective of the ice rink, with the view shifting vertically to follow the player in possession of the puck. The game features a full roster of 24 NHL teams and 288 players licensed by the NHLPA.
Available game modes differ between console releases. The NES version provides an exhibition option, a training mode for practicing offensive and defensive play, and a super cup competition structured as a round robin tournament. On the SNES, players can engage in a practice session that functions as an exhibition or a shootout, as well as a full season mode. The teams that qualify for the NES super cup are determined by their final standings from the SNES season mode.
