Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie on SNES is a side scrolling beat'em up where players select from six different rangers. The objective is to progress through seven expansive stages, which include diverse locations such as urban environments, a train, and a ski resort with a snowboarding segment.
Gameplay involves fighting numerous enemy types, primarily from Lord Zedd's Putty Patrol, culminating in boss encounters. A core mechanic is a power bar that fills as players collect items from fallen foes. When full, this allows a transformation into a more durable and powerful ranger form. A second filling of the bar grants temporary access to a character specific weapon or a special attack.
The action occurs on two separate planes, and players can switch between the foreground and background lanes to engage enemies or avoid hazards. In the two player cooperative mode, each ranger can occupy their own lane, with switching being optional. The rangers begin each stage in their civilian identities before acquiring the energy needed to morph.
