Axelay is a scrolling shoot 'em up for the Super Nintendo. Its visual presentation is distinguished by the use of Mode 7 effects, which create an illusion of depth in the vertically scrolling stages.
The setting involves a planet invaded by an unknown alien force. A single prototype defense ship, the AX-77 Axelay, is deployed in a mission to strike at the alien homeworld.
Gameplay alternates between vertically and horizontally scrolling levels. The player pilots the sole prototype vessel against the alien attackers.
