Shinobi is a game where the player takes on the role of Joe Musashi, a shinobi. His mission involves navigating through distinct levels, each composed of multiple scenes, to locate and free hostages.
Musashi's arsenal includes standard shurikens and close combat moves like kicks and punches. He also has access to ninja magic capable of eliminating all on screen enemies at once. Opposition comes from various sources, including standard henchmen with firearms, other ninjas, and large guards who protect the hostages by throwing swords.
The conclusion of every level features a confrontation with a boss character. These major adversaries vary greatly in form, from towering giants to mechanized threats like helicopter gunships.
