Life Force is a shooter where players control a ship to defend their planet from a cosmic threat. The antagonist is an alien named Zelos, whose consumption of celestial bodies now endangers the player's world.
Two players can cooperate in the campaign, which consists of six stages. These levels vary between side scrolling and vertical scrolling perspectives, each concluding with a guardian encounter. Destroying specific foes releases enhancements for the ship, such as improved weaponry, increased speed, or protective shields.
